Revealing the story of HMS Royal Oak
HMS Royal Oak, a 29,000 ton battleship of the Royal Navy, was sunk at her mooring inside Scapa Flow by U47 on the night of 13th December 1939 with the loss of 833 lives. As the hull rusted she started to leak some of the 3000 tons of fuel oil on-board when she sank. The Ministry of Defence commissioned an ADUS survey of the wreck, subsequent to which they have started to carefully remove the remainder of the fuel oil from what is the largest war-grave in the Northern Hemisphere.
